Miami Dade College Continue Education Opa Locka

Miami Dade College, often referred to as Miami Dade or MDC, is a public, state college that resides in Miami, Florida. With over 160,000 students, eight campus locations and 21 outreach centers, Miami Dade is the largest college in the Florida College System as well as one of the largest state colleges in the United States. It is also the largest college in Florida and the second-largest in the U.S. The college's main campus is located in Downtown Miami.

Miami Dade College (MDC) was founded in 1959 and opened a year later in 1960. It was originally named Dade County Junior College and held classes in the Miami Central High School building. Its campus included part of the high school as well as a farm located next door. MDC was unique among colleges of its time, as it actively enrolled Cuban exiles and African American students who could not afford other education opportunities. Due to its policy of non-segregation, MCC became the first integrated junior college in Florida. In late 1960, a newer facility was built near Opa-Locka Airport to support growth in the student population. This facility became MDC's North Campus. As the college continued to grow, additional satellite campuses were established in Pinecrest, Kendall and Downtown Miami (which eventually became the college's main campus). By the early 1970s, Miami Dade College had grown larger than the University of Florida and Florida State University. At about the same time MCD officially changed its name to Miami-Dade Community College.

MDC originally had an open admissions policy, and as a result MDC's focus became improving its academic offering for its every growing student body. As a biproduct of this focus, the college's Medical Center was built near the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital in order to provide students with nursing and Allied Health education programs. With the mass emigration of Cubans who departed from Cuba's Mariel Harbor for the United States (Florida) in 1980, MDC launched a new outreach center in Hialeah to provide refugees the opportunity to obtain a college level education. Shortly thereafter, MDC built another outreach center, the InterAmerican Center, to accommodate the unique needs of the bilingual community living in southern Florida. In 1990, MDC built the Homestead Campus, in the city of Homestead, to accommodate a growing numbers of students who were unable to commute to the Kendall Campus.

In 2006, Miami Dade College launched its West Campus in the city of Doral located in north-central Miami-Dade County. Today the college's Hialeah outreach center has become a fully accredited campus, with expansion plans in the work.

Like many higher education institutions, MDC now offers a virtual campus, where students can earn their college degree entirely online. Currently, MDC offers Associate of Arts (A.A.), Associate of Science (A.S.) and College Credit Certificates entirely online via MDC's virtual college. Associate of Science degree programs are offered in several disciplines including Accounting Technology, Business Administration, Computer Programming and Analysis, Criminal Justice Technology, Financial Services, Health Information Management, Marketing Management Entrepreneurship, Marketing Management – International Business, and General Marketing Management.

For talented students, MDC offers an Honors College. The Honors College is a symbol of MDC's commitment to academic excellence for gift students and those students are willing to put in the time and effort to rise to new academic heights. In 2007, the Honors College expanded into the InterAmerican Campus with the Honors College Dual Language Honors Program, which was established to meet the needs of a growing Spanish-speaking student body.

In 2003, MDC received approval by the state to award baccalaureate degrees in education. Today, the College offers three bachelor degree programs. In connect with its new status as a four-year college, Miami Dade Community College changed its name to Miami Dade College.

Of MDC's 160,000 students, each year about 6,000 go on to pursue a bachelor's degree. Those students who earn an Associate of Arts degree in preparation for a bachelor's degree program typically transfer to schools within the State University System of Florida, though a few transfer to out-of-state colleges and universities (typically through pre-arranged articulation agreements). Students graduating from the MDC Honors College with an associate's degree have been accepted to many pretigious four-year colleges and universities throughout the nation.

Campuses and Facilities

In addition to eight campuses, Miami Dade College (MDC) operates several outreach centers that are located throughout Miami-Dade County. Currently, the MDC Honors College is found on four of MDC's eight campuses. The new Honors College Dual Language Honors Program is located at the InterAmerican Campus. Each MDC campus is home to several individual academic schools which represent various disciplines (business, medicine, engineering, etc.). While each MDC campus is somewhat autonomous, many campuses provide dual-enrollment programs for aspiring high school students as well as College Preparatory and ESL (English as a Second Language) courses to help students prepare to pass mandatory admittance exams.

The following is a list of Miami Date College campuses along with basic information on each:

  • The North Campus (11380 NW 27th Ave., Miami FL 33167) offers specialized education programs for aspiring Emergency medical services personnel, police officers, and firefighters. In partnership with the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) this campus offers a reputable undergraduate engineering program. For students interested in careers in entertainment or design, MDC North Campus offers the School of Entertainment and Design Technology. While not located on the premise, North Campus operates the Carrie Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center in Liberty City. Within North Campus's School of Justice, students can now take advantage of an Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Public Safety.
  • The Kendall Campus (11011 SW 104th St., Miami FL 33176) is home many of the College's administration facilities, including the Enrollment and Disbursing Office. The College's many athletic teams also call Kendall home. The Honors College, the Miami Dade College Foundation and the College's President's office are also located on the Kendall Campus.
  • The Wolfson Campus (300 NE 2nd Ave., Miami FL 33132) provides a fully accredited higher education program that is attended by nearly 27,000 students each year. The Wolfson Campus offers students a full-service library, two computer courtyards, and various art galleries. This campsus hosts the city's annual Miami Book Fair International, the country's largest literary festival, which attracts famous authors as well as hundreds of thousands of spectators from across the country. Wolfson Campus has a renowned business program as well as a popular paralegal program that is approved by the American Bar Association.
  • The MDC Medical Center (950 NW 20th St., Miami FL 33127), located in downtown Miami, offers students the opportunity to earn a degree in Nursing (BSN/RN) or prepare for a career in various Allied Health fields. Students of MDC's Medical Center can earn an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in preparation for entry-level health professions.
  • The Homestead Campus (500 College Ter., Homestead FL 33030) is the only campus within the Miami Dade College system to offer an Aviation program. The MDC Aviation program at Homestead is one of only 13 schools in the country that is ATC-CTI accredited by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration).
  • The InterAmerican Campus (627 SW 27th Ave., Miami FL 33135) is home to Miami Dade's School of Education, which offers the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Education degree program. The College's first recipients of the B.S. in Education graduated from InterAmerican in 2005.
  • The New World School of Arts (25 NE 2nd St., Miami FL 33132) offers both high school and college programs (via Advanced Placement courework and exams) that focus on dance, theatre, music, and visual arts. Admission to the New World School of Arts programs typically requires an audition and/or a portfolio for admissions staff to review. The school is currently ranked 17th within Florida.
  • The Hialeah Campus (1776 W 49th St., Hialeah FL 33012), once part of MDC's North Campus, is now regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and offers degree programs similiar to those offered at other MDC campuses. While the Hialeah Campus facilities are smaller than those found at other campuses, there are plans to expand the campus.
  • The West Campus (3800 NW 115th Ave., Doral FL 33178) is one of Miami Dades newer campuses. The campus was opened in mid-2006 as a convenience for a substantial number of students and faculty living in and around Doral city.
  • The Carrie. P Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center (6300 NW 7th Ave., Miami FL 33150), often referred to as MEEC, is one of several Miami Dade College outreach centers. Although the MEEC outreach center offers college courses, its primary objective is to provide vocational training programs, seminars and workshops individuals seeking gainful employment.

In addition to MEEC and the New World School of Arts, Miami Dade College operates and administers 19 other outreach centers located in the Miami Dade County area.
